Bob Harper Photography’s purpose is to provide the services that allow the celebration of people—and relationships—through outstanding, unparalleled, fine art portraiture.
In today’s digital world, there is the misconception that one, armed with an expensive camera, can create professional quality images. Indeed, camera manufacturers, in order to garner more sales, tend to make that premise a part of their marketing strategy. In reality, this is a gross over exaggeration. A camera is to a photographer as a stove is to a chef. Just having the latest and best kitchen equipment does not turn one into a renowned and sought after culinary artist overnight. Any weekend golfer knows, also, that the purchase of the most popular golf clubs used by the turing professionals does not necessarily improve one’s golf score. Only practice, generally under the tutelage of a golf pro, will achieve that.
Our specialty at Bob Harper Portraits is creating art piece portraits destined to be extremely significant in a family’s legacy and serve as testament to the love, affection, and respect that bind us as humans. While most of our portraits begin in our studio, we do venture to outside locations that are important to our clients.
Our portrait creation process begins with a discussion or consultation with our clients to identify important considerations, relationship aspects, desired styling, suitable clothing, just to name a few pertinent points. This consultation may take place in person or by phone, with the result being a solid direction that guides the portrait creation process.
The capture session usually requires about an hour to an hour and a half, depending on the location and number of people within the family. Generally, location sessions last longer than studio sessions. The purpose of the capture session is to gather the digital data to allow for the creation of the portrait vision. Here, it is vital that the photographer obtain this digital information in adequate quantity and in excellent quality to provide the utmost latitude to accomplish the portrait creation. If the capture session is on location, then the time of day and other environmental conditions come into play and must be addressed to achieve optimal results. Having the
right equipment and experiences crucial at this stage of the process.
Following digital capture, the images are evaluated and the best candidates are mutually reviewed, discussed, approved, and advanced into the portrait creation process.
Once these decisions are made, we then process the digital data to enhance the beauty and emphasize the character of the individuals. If the client desires, we also offer digital painting and hand finishing of our portraits using acrylics and oils.
Ultimately, we deliver to our clients the portrait vision we—and they—set out to create. Our portraits are “art piece” portraits—fully retouched, with full artistry, and generally presented on the finest canvases, sealed by real lacquer and exquisitely framed to provide the necessary presence that a family heirloom deserves.
Here is a recent example of an individual portrait created in the studio. I am showing the progression of images from the original data, to the processed information, the addition of a replacement background, and the final art piece portrait.
And, here is an example of one of our location portraits, again showing the progression from the beginning to the final creation:
Celebrating the most important people in one’s life may come at any time, but we suggest that families consider commissioning an art piece portrait at important milestones—graduations, for example—when the family unit is about to experience a transition of some type. We at Bob Harper Portraits are happy to discuss your thoughts and desires for art piece portraits whenever it is convenient for you. Let us create a treasured family heirloom for you!
